Gymnocalycium saglionis can grow significantly larger than many other species in the genus, with mature plants reaching up to 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter or more. The body is globular to slightly flattened and typically dark green to blue-green in color. The cactus has prominent, well-defined ribs that number between 12 and 20, which can give the plant a somewhat ribbed or ridged appearance.
