Small plant that is densely covered in spines with central spine being hooked. Flowers are red and appear late spring/ early summer.

Turbinicarpus Schmiedickeanus subs. Macrochele is a slow growing dwarf cactus, usually solitary but can become branched with age. Like other Turbinicarpus it has a tendency to flower when young. Flowers are small, white and plant can several flushes per season. Spines are soft and somewhat papery.

This cactus is highly endemic to its native habitat due to grazing and overcollection of the plant. It occurs in less than five localities in Mexico. Flowers appear in spring and summer, small and deep magenta in color.
