It closely resembles Astrophytum myriostigma but is distinguished by its grayish, felt-like coating and genetic differences. This species typically has 5 ribs, a spineless body, and produces large, yellow, funnel-shaped flowers, sometimes with a reddish center.

A small solitary cactus with a globular stem, of a reddish-green color. It has well furrowed ribs, where, at the ends, downy white areoles are formed, from which small brown needle-like spines emerge. One of the most beautiful and sought after Gymnocalycium.
