An extremely rare cactus, one of the largest species of the genus, which can reach up to 30 cm. It consists of long tubercles that are arranged as in a greyish-green rosette, sometimes curved and with a pointed tip, in a typical elongated triangular shape. Yellow flowers appear late in autum usually in october.

The stem collar and apex is covered in paper-like bristles that originates from the basal rest of tubercles. The bristles are coffee-colored with reddish tones.
