Gymnocalycium riograndense is a small, globular cactus that typically grows as a solitary plant. It has a dark green, spherical to slightly flattened body with distinct ribs. The ribs are adorned with small areoles from which short, curved spines emerge. The spines are usually light brown to grayish in color.

It is an attractive, low growing cactus with pale yellow/green flowers. This plant has been discovered many years ago, however description of it was lost and therefore many people thought that this plant does not exist at all!
